On November 16, 2014, Sydney’s first ever pop-up reggae bar will feature a selection of leading reggae bands and DJs for one guaranteed colourful and festive event. Whilst lockouts and a lack of decent venues continue to dampen inner city nightlife, the Sydney DIY scene couldn’t be more alive.
Sparky’s Reggae Bar represents the collaboration of Ernie Garland from Kinsky, the Hive Bar in Erskineville, creative hub Create or Die and venue, The Studio. With Summer on its way, reggae/bass culture is proving that Sydney has more to offer than ‘Top 40’ music-playing nightclubs, ACDC cover bands, and 2am lockouts.
“Places like Marrickville, Alexandria and surrounds are bursting with creative spaces to get shit happening, which is a better alternative than setting up next to the cigarette machine in the corner of a little pub. The reggae/ bass culture scene in Sydney is really healthy especially around the Inner West and has been for a long time. The other band on the bill, TravelaZ is from Manly which is another Reggae hotspot. There are a lot of awesome DJs in this town and a few of them will be working it at Sparky’s, which is bitchen. Sparky’s is the first of its kind in Sydney and I can’t wait for November 16!” [Ernie Garland].
The Sydney reggae scene has produced more than great music, it has bridged together various cultures, age groups, socio-economic groups, locations, and subcultures. Furthermore it removes barriers by creating a sense of ‘oneness’ and projects the general ethos of positive vibrations.
TravelaZ will travel over the bridge to bring its own style of Trip-Reggae south of the harbour. Made up of members from Venezuela, Brazil, Portugal and Italy, TravelaZ sails through many genres to arrive at a very unique sonic juncture. Sharing the stage with the likes of Finley Quaye and Groundation, and holding a globally produced debut album under its belt, Kinsky is on the crest of the Australian roost music wave. The 9-piece roots-reggae ensemble creates a spectacle that is both visually and viscerally invigorating. With beautiful 3 part vocal harmonies and a stomping rhythm section, Kinsky always gets people skankin’.
The DJs on the bill for this event form a cavalcade of music education and entertainment.
Among the selectas are More Judgment, Basslines (Dutty Dancing), Bhopps (Foreigndub), and Mooch (Tuff Love Radio) plus more to be announced. There will also be a special live performance from Kamauri (Jamaica), which is not to be missed.
